Modem Configuration using Windows XP

Step 1
From the Start Menu, select Control Panel then click on Phone and Modems to display this screen.
Next, click on New.
Step 2
Type in your name for your new location, your local area code and, if necessary, the digit you need to dial to access an outside line (usually 9 or 0). This is also the place to enter your code to disable your call-waiting service if you have this on your line.
Select the Calling Card tab and go to step 3.

Step 3
The selected Calling Card tab will display this screen.
Select British Telecom (UK) then enter your BT Chargecard account number and PIN in the relevant boxes.
Select Edit button and go to step 4.

Step 4
Selecting the Edit button, will display this screen.
Continue to step 5.

Step 5
Edit the three tabs across the top, Long Distance, International and Local Calls (Most users should be able to just edit the long distance calls tab if they have a non-geographic access number for their ISP). All three tabs are edited to look the same. Whichever tab edited first will appear like this.
The steps listed for accessing your BT Chargecard account are incorrect, you can leave the "Dial the access number" instruction, however you will need to highlight each of the other steps in turn and delete them using the delete button at the side. Next using the buttons below, you will need to create the following dialing sequence on step 6.

Step 6
The times of 8 or 6 seconds work for most modem connections within the UK, however, depending on your modem speed or telephony connection, these times may have to be adjusted.
The access number of 0800 144144 is recommended for connections within the UK instead of just 144 for manual calls. This access number should be replaced with the appropriate country code if calling from abroad.
Once these changes have been made, click OK, then OK again.
Then Continue to step 7.

Step 7
Your new connection will then be saved and your original screen will then look similar to this.
